The Night Before Surgery

We left home about 7pm and had a nice easy journey round the M25 and into Cambridge. Anthony seemed very happy to be left ‘home alone’ and even gave me a goodbye hug which was lovely.  We’re now all checked in at our hotel – the Holiday Inn near Duxford.  It took us a while to find it as the SatNav took us to the wrong side of a railway line that runs close to the hotel…but once we found our way to the opposite side of the tracks we saw the hotel.

Our room is clean and comfortable and we’ve watched some TV and are ready for bed.  I’m not sure how much I will sleep as the thought of what tomorrow will bring is screaming in my head.  Chris still seems very relaxed and shows no signs of feeling anxious at all which is a great relief.

So – it’s lights out now ready for an early start.  We have to be at the hospital for 7am tomorrow.

Packing for Cambridge

Today has been strange day.  Chris is at school this morning and taking his Mandarin test and I am at home packing.  But packing to go to hospital is very different to packing for a holiday and I don’t know what to take with me, or what Chris would like to have with him.  I know what he will “need” – the hospital has given me a list – but what else would be good to take?

I want to take some things from home to put in his room at hospital to make it feel more ‘homely’ and less ‘clinical’.  I have printed out some photos of Chris with his football team and with our mad but lovely dog and put them into photo frames.  I have also packed DVD’s, a couple of games (Domino’s, Uno) and some presents from his brother and me and Steve.

I’ve also packed some healthy fruit and less healthy cookies for when he feels like eating again after the surgery.

We have booked a hotel near the hospital and Steve will sleep there while I stay at the hospital with Chris.  So, we have a variety of bags packed and I have taken a variety of vest tops and cardigans as it’s always hot in hospitals.  I’ve also taken a pile of books and magazines to read.

Chris is going to go to Costa with some friends after school to have a ‘farewell and good luck’ hot choc and cookies.  I will pick him up after that and we plan to eat here with Anthony and then hit the road about 7pm to hopefully arrive at the hotel around 9-9.30pm.

Chinese Revision!

Chris is doing Mandarin GCSE and will be absent from school when his class take their speaking test.  The school have kindly arranged for him to sit this test before he has his surgery so this week he is working hard on his revision.  He has to prepare answers to 14 questions and then learn his responses so that he can ‘have a conversation’ with his Chinese teacher.

He also has to prepare and learn a statement about himself and his school.  This will also be spoken to his teacher.  So, my job for the next couple of nights is to test him…not easy as I don’t speak a word of Chinese!  But I am learning how to say some of the key words and can understand what he is saying as long as I have it written down in front of me.

The test is on Thursday morning – the day we travel to Cambridge!  Fingers crossed for him.

Back to Cambridge for Final Appointments and X-Rays

We are now getting closer to the surgery date of 5th December and had to return to the hospital so that they can do their final pre-operative checks and tests.  We managed to get everything booked on one day again which made life much easier.

So, today Chris had the following appointments:

  • X-ray: Today they took the final images of his spine that will be used to decide how much of his spine needs to be ‘fixed’.  They took a total of 4 x-rays: two side-bend x-rays, a lateral x-ray and a full spine x-ray.
  • Lead Paediatric Nurse – We spent almost an hour with Sally, the lead nurse who will look after Chris on the day of his surgery.  She went through a very detailed pre-admission form with us and then did blood, urine, MRSA and ECG tests on Chris and finally checked his height and weight.  His height was 1.72m (he should be considerably taller post surgery!)
  • Mr Conlan – he reviewed the x-rays and went through the surgical procedure with us once again answering our final questions.  Steve then signed the forms giving our permission for the surgery and accepting the risks associated with this form of spinal surgery…I’m trying hard not to think about those

I had been anxious about today, but once again everyone we met was so helpful, kind and well informed that we all relaxed and felt very reassured that Chris will be in safe hands. It is now just a matter of days until the ‘Big Day’ is here.  And the only thing Mr Conlan said that made me stressed was that if Chris has any signs or symptoms of a cough or cold when the surgery is due they would have to postpone the surgery by 6 weeks.  So – no pressure there then – I just have to keep him fit and healthy for the next 9 days…easy in a school full of coughing and sneezing children!!

Surgery Date is Confirmed!

We finally have a date for Chris to have his spinal surgery – Friday 5th December.  It’s still a month away, but it is the brilliant surgical team that we wanted of Mr Conlan and Mr Crawford.

I feel relieved and terrified at the same time now.  Very happy that we can get the correction done this year but really anxious about the surgery itself – it is such a big operation to put Chris through and yet these teenagers seems to bounce back from it really quickly.

Now that we know the date we can start planning for it and I have a long list of jobs to work through:

  • Ask my mother-in-law to look after the dog
  • Work out who will look after Anthony while we are in Cambridge (although I already know what he’ll say – “I’m 17 mum and I’m fine to look after myself”)
  • Find a hotel near the hospital that we can stay in
  • Book some physio appointments for Chris the week prior to surgery – this will help to get his back muscles ‘smooth and relaxed’ rather being ‘tight and knotted’
  • Sort out how I will manage my clients’ work in December
  • Get Steve to plan the days off that he needs
  • Confirm the date with school and work out how long Chris will be absent and how to help keep him up to date with all his GCSE courses
  • Speak to the company who is leading the school expedition to Kyrgyzstan and see if they will still take Chris with them in July 2015

And most importantly make sure Chris is fit and well on the day of surgery.  The fact that he is still playing football and taking part in matches makes me anxious as I worry that he may be the victim of a bad tackle and have an injury that delays the surgery!

A Surprise Half Term Holiday for the Boys!

One of the things that most upset Chris about needing surgery is that we had to cancel our long awaited trip to Canada to stay with my sister in Vancouver for Christmas.  It had been a year in the planning and we were all really looking forward to being with them on Christmas Day – but we’ve had to cancel that now.

In the last few weeks Chris has put up with a lot of different people examining his back and making him exercise and he has accepted it all without complaint.  Equally, his older brother has accepted without complaint that all of our attention is current on Chris!  I wanted to surprise them both with a holiday this half term as I think the whole family could do with a break from thinking about Scoliosis and spinal surgery.

Northern-Lights-IcelandWe have looked online and chosen a five day tour of Iceland!!

I am so excited about it…we will swim in the Blue Lagoon, see waterfalls, gysers, volcanic lava fields, glaciers and icebergs…and hopefully (if we are lucky enough) we may even see the Northern Lights!

Great Support from Chris’ School

schoolToday I had a meeting with Chris’ Tutor to talk about how much school he will miss as a result of the surgery and what we can do to try and help him keep up with all his lessons.  Mr Smith was incredibly supportive and he will speak to each of Chris’ subject teachers to find out whether there are any important GCSE tests/CAT’s that Chris will miss – assuming he has his surgery mid November or early December (we are still waiting for a date!)

At least we will have the Christmas holidays as part of his recovery time so that will be two weeks less school time that he will miss!

I am going to meet with Mr Smith again once all of Chris’ teachers have done a plan for the work he will miss and what he can do from home to try and keep up.

Three Days of Schroth Therapy at Tetbury Osteopaths

tetbury ostepathsI have told you before about Peter Roberts and Tetbury Osteopaths and this week Steve and Chris went to Tetbury to work with Peter to improve Chris’ technique with his Schroth exercises and to learn some new exercises and stretches to get his back in the best possible shape prior to surgery.

Steve and Chris set off together on Monday 15th September for three days of one-to-one exercise therapy with Peter.  I stayed at home with Chris’ older brother Anthony – and of course the dog!

Chris worked hard with Peter for around 4 hours each day refining our technique on our existing Schroth exercises, focusing on the importance of his breathing technique.  Through breathing into the appropriate parts of the lungs Chris was able to use his lungs like bellows to stretch out his rib cage and work against the curve.  In this way he learnt how to really expand his ribs where the curve of his spine has squashed them.  He also learnt a couple of new stretches that help to de-rotate the spine and help his standing posture.

Today the two boys returned home with a new exercise regime for Chris to do morning and evening.  Needless to say Chris is still not keen on the exercises but we know how important it will be for his recovery post surgery to have good muscle strength and flexibility.  The surgery will move a lot of these muscles out of their usual position and muscle pain is one of the main causes of discomfort post surgery – so we want to make sure these muscles are smooth and flexible when he has the procedure.  This will hopefully minimise the discomfort he suffers after surgery.

Working with Peter has been a great help to us and he is incredibly knowledgeable about Scoliosis and the Schroth Technique.  If you want to get help from a real expert you can do no better than Peter!

Cambridge Pre-Op Appointments Day

Our first appointment today was at 11.30 in Cambridge with Dr Ross-Russell.  This meant leaving home fairly early in case we get stuck on the M25.  In fact we had a good journey and arrived in plenty of time for our meeting with Dr Ross-Russell.  He examined Chris and then did a full lung function test to check his flow rates.  Despite the size of Chris’ curve the results were good and he estimated there was a less than 5% chance of Chris needing to be on an airway post surgery.  This was a great relief to all of us.

We then met Sarah Charlton, a Physiotherapist who specialises in paediatric othopaedics and spinal deformity.  She examined Chris and was impressed with the muscle tone in this back and how he was able to improve his posture and align his spine by himself thanks to all the exercises and stretches we have done with him over the last year!  She also showed us a number of pre and post op x-rays from surgical corrections done by Mr Conlan and Mr Crawford.  The x-rays were really impressive and Chris didn’t seem bothered by the sight of all that metal work in someone’s back.

frankie and bennysAfter finishing with Sarah we headed off to find somewhere for lunch and opted for Frankie and Benny’s for something quick and tasty as we only had about 50 minutes before we had to be at Addenbrookes for the MRI Scan.

Yet again Chris was really cool about the MRI and didn’t seem to be too bothered by the small space he had to be in, or the loud noises the machine makes.  Once the technician had checked the scans we were free to go – unfortunately straight into the evening rush hour traffic so it was a very long journey home.

But today was a good day.  Everyone we met has been really positive about the likely outcome of surgery for Chris and I have great confidence in them.  I just wish we had a confirmed date so that we could start planning and preparing ourselves for it.  Hopefully it will come through soon.
